CINERAMA: home of cinema, music and art
By Laura Martínez
At Cinerama, we take a look back at the highlights of our cycle of films and documentaries, as well as the most inspiring cultural talks hosted in our classic cinema.
Cinema is one of the pillars on which the universe of Concept Hotel Group rests, which is why what we do at Cinerama is really an extension of one of our greatest passions. Our classic movie theater inside Hotel Grand Paradiso is a true homage to the seventh art itself: velvet seats with side tables for your cocktail, a screen framed by a raised stage and red curtains straight out of old Hollywood, and walls lined with iconic film posters. The perfect setting for screenings, talks, retrospectives, documentaries and premieres that have turned this space into a genuine cultural refuge on the island.
We love carefully curating the films we screen, with a keen eye for the independent, the unconventional, the disruptive. Stories and filmmakers who dare to look at the world differently. One screening that holds a special place in our memory was Una Noche con Adela, a bold Spanish film starring the fantastic Laura Galán, presented by its director Hugo Ruiz. A shocking film with an ending that left everyone speechless, followed by a lively, original Q&A where Hugo generously shared behind-the-scenes stories of shooting through Madrid’s night streets.

Equally uncompromising was actor and director Eduardo Casanova, who came to present his remarkable film La Piedad, starring the always brilliant Ángela Molina—an Ibiza lover recently honored with the island’s Key to the City—in the role of a disturbingly possessive mother obsessed with her son. Another unforgettable screening was Andrea Bagney’s debut feature Ramona, starring singer Lourdes Hernández, aka Russian Red, in her first role as an actress. An intimate, charming portrait of a restless millennial navigating life’s uncertainties, the film felt like a Spanish echo of Greta Gerwig’s Frances Ha.

We also welcomed Guillermo Polo, half of the Polo Brothers, who presented Lo Carga el Diablo, a dark comedy road movie co-written with David Pascual, Guillermo Guerrero and Vicente Peñarrocha, centering on a wild adventure between two brothers. More recently, Ibiza-born filmmaker and Goya nominee David Marqués screened Puntos Suspensivos, a theatrical thriller starring Cecilia Suárez, José Coronado, Diego Peretti and Georgina Amorós. He joined artist Marcos Torres, who created the film’s striking graphic artwork, to share curiosities from the production.

The actress Lola Rodríguez also visited us to talk about the acclaimed series Vestidas de Azul, of which we screened two episodes. Alongside co-stars Bimba Farelo and Penélope Guerrero, Rodríguez brings to life a story inspired by Valeria Vegas’ book, itself based on the 1983 documentary of the same name by Arturo Giménez Rico, which followed the struggles of a group of trans women in Madrid fighting for acceptance in a society that rejected them.

But Cinerama is not only about films and documentaries. Recently, our cinema also hosted the launch of Superstars by Kenai Alkazar, presented by the iconic Silvia Superstar, with whom he revisited Madrid’s movida and the unforgettable characters captured in his book. We also welcomed journalist and music writer Fernando Navarro with his first book, Everything That Matters Happens in Songs.

And cinema is not only to be watched—it’s also to be discussed. That was clear in a retrospective I had the pleasure of hosting with content creators Meriidiano and María Valero, dedicated to the singular universe of David Lynch. A small but heartfelt tribute in the wake of the passing of one of the most charismatic and unique filmmakers of our time.

The ever-versatile Sören Manzoni—showman, DJ, skater, surfer, speaker, collector of vintage treasures, and dear friend of the house—has also joined us on several occasions. One standout moment was his talk on the documentary 265 días sin olas, about the birth of Barcelona’s surf scene in the 1980s, when the city still turned its back on the sea and the sport was virtually unknown. Alongside surfer Hugo Ruiz, he retraced how the phenomenon began and how it endures on the Catalan coast. Manzoni’s most recent visit, in June, brought Olympic skateboarder Danny León for an energetic talk about skate culture, followed by a live exhibition at Venice Bay courtesy of Red Bull.
